How Does Reverse Osmosis Work?

Reverse osmosis water treatment (RO) is a type of filtration which removes many types of large molecules and ions from water  by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane (RO membrane). The result is that the molecules and some contaminants are left on the pressurized side of the membrane and the filtered water is allowed to pass to the other side. In order to be effective, the RO membrane should be selective and not allow large molecules or ions to pass through the pores (holes), but will allow smaller components of the solution, such as water, to pass freely.
